The Cause of Reaching
Kids in Hospitals
Imagine you're a child who is sick in a hospital. You
have a serious medical situation involving cancer, or your heart, or childhood diabetes, or
one of the thousands of other conditions that inflict
kids.
You're
scared every time the door opens as you don't know if someone in a white coat is going to come in and poke and
prod you. You're scared of needles and examinations. You can't control your schedule as you're woken
thoughtout the night. You can't play as your friends do outside of the
hospital. It's the first time you've seen your parents scared. You become isolated, fearful and you
can't watch another minute of television.
In walks an Open Heart Magic Hospital Magicain to your
hospital room. While you don't feel like seeing anyone - you've turned everyone else away - you have
always wanted to see magic and give him a chance. Cards are changing right in front of
you. Balls are popping out of your hands. You start to sit up. You smile, then you laugh
and see your Mom see you laugh and she laughs as well.
The magician offers to teach you magic so
you raise your hand and repeat the Magician's Code and learn magic and receive special tricks and
a Secret Lesson. You are sitting up, smiling and
doing magic for your nurses. You also hear there's Bedside Magic
again every couple days every week! Your Mom is as excited as you are
as it's the first time she's seen you smile since she brought you to the hospital.
What
sets Open Heart Magic (OHM) Hospital Bedside Magic
Apart
OHM does not discriminate on
disease. We see kids who are fighting cancer and the terrible major illnesses but there are
thousands and thousands of kids who have other serious medical conditions who aren't part of non-profit
programming because they don't have the right illness. When you support OHM, you support all of the kids
especially those who aren't able to be part of other programs offered to the patients in the rooms next to
them.
Bedside Magic is one of the few
programs IN the hospital at the child's bedside. This is important as many kids can't
leave their bed, can't move their arms or be part of other activities. OHM Bedside Magic reaches kids at that
critical time in their lives when they need as much energy and resolve to fight their illness and get better.
Magic and laughter can be the strongest medicine.
OHM Bedside Magic can reach so
many more children in hospitals around Greater Chicago. Your participation in the Miles for
Magic program will have a noticeable impact on how many kids we can see because we're a small and lean
organization. Your miles will truly bring smiles rather than be part of a major fundraising department's revenue
goals.
